According to a 2006 survey by the American Hospital Association (AHA), more than one out of every four hospitals in the U.S. now offer some "alternative" therapies, including acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, and massage therapy, among other types of non-Western treatment.

The survey, conducted every other year by the AHA, involved more than 6,000 hospitals across the country in December 2005. The percentage of hospitals offering "complementary and alternative medicine" (CAM) therapies grew from 8 percent in 1998 to 27 percent in 2005, the survey found.

The survey also found that patients paid for most of these services out of pocket.

Alternative health care treatments are a necessary component of any discussion of primary care health care delivery systems reform. Our research at American Eastern Institute shows that these natural, non-invasive, non deadly, inexpensive therapies are increasingly evidenced based and are rapidly becoming mainstreamed by traditional allopathic practioners.

The lower costs of training professionals and of treatment delivery, coupled with patient satisfaction, are clear benefits of their usage- for the greater good of all.

What is Alternative Medicine - Part 1

Online Degrees in Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is where science-based Western medicine and naturopathic Eastern healing practices meet. The alternative medicine practice of naturopathy treats the entire patient, not just his symptoms. If you enrolled in an alternative medicine degree program you could study:

* Anatomy and physiology

* Biochemistry and microbiology

* Surgery

* Herbalism

* Natural health practices

* Holistic nutrition

* Naturopathy

* Aroma therapy

Alternative medicine is the study and practice of how the body heals itself. Rather than subjecting patients to drugs and invasive surgeries to root out diseases, alternative medicine looks for the root of the problem. Healers look to remove blocks to natural healing and use herbalists' skills, holistic nutrition, and other non-invasive homeopathy techniques.
